We might call this, “the process of therapy.” Instead of the therapist being a passive listener, he or she becomes active, countering what is argued for and debating on the validity of the opinions offered. In short, difficult clients are the clients, who insist on being the client-leaving it to the therapist to do the work. But, having to ask for their attention, reply to their questions, counter their insistence and get them to meet commitments they have made-that’s work for the client and the therapist. They think they are doing it right, and they should. But I think that one reason clients are difficult is because they are doing more of the work than necessary. I’ve had a few difficult clients over the years-as I discuss more in this column.
